DIIV Oshin: A Dreamy and Melodic Debut

DIIV is a Brooklyn-based indie rock band led by Zachary Cole Smith, who is also a touring guitarist for Beach Fossils. The band was originally named Dive, after the Nirvana song of the same name, but changed their name to DIIV in 2012 to avoid confusion with other bands. DIIV released their debut album, Oshin, in June 2012 on Captured Tracks, a label known for its roster of lo-fi and dream pop artists.

Oshin is a 40-minute journey into a hazy and hypnotic world of shimmering guitars, ethereal vocals, and driving rhythms. The album draws inspiration from various genres and influences, such as krautrock, shoegaze, post-punk, and surf rock. The songs are mostly instrumental, with Smith's vocals buried in the mix or used as another layer of sound. The lyrics are often cryptic and abstract, reflecting Smith's personal struggles with addiction and depression.

The album opens with "Druun", a short instrumental track that sets the tone for the rest of the album. The song features a simple but catchy guitar riff that repeats over a pulsing bass line and a steady drum beat. The song fades into "Past Lives", a more upbeat and energetic track that showcases Smith's melodic guitar work and his airy vocals. The song also introduces one of the main themes of the album: the idea of reincarnation and the cycle of life and death.

The album continues with songs like "Human", "Air Conditioning", "How Long Have You Known", and "Wait", which explore different aspects of Smith's psyche and emotions. The songs are catchy and infectious, but also have a sense of melancholy and nostalgia. The album reaches its climax with "(Druun Pt. II)", a reprise of the opening track that adds more layers of guitars and synths, creating a wall of sound that envelops the listener. The album closes with "Follow", a slower and more introspective track that features Smith's most clear and direct vocals on the album. The song is about letting go of the past and moving on to the future.

Oshin is a remarkable debut album that showcases DIIV's ability to create captivating and immersive music that blends different styles and influences. The album received critical acclaim from various publications and websites, such as Pitchfork, NME, Spin, and Rolling Stone. The album also ranked among the best albums of 2012 by several critics and publications. Oshin is a must-listen for fans of indie rock, dream pop, shoegaze, and psychedelic music.
